A hydrogen alpha shot of the California Nebula from my backyard! This is an emission nebula in the constellation of Perseus, so named because of its resemblance to the state. At a distance of 1000 light years from earth, this large nebula is illuminated by the nearby bright star xi Persei at the top of the image.
